As a matter of fact, it isn't. We have so much to do in our daily busy-ness that we seldom take time out to thank the Lord for the blessings we have found. We may not be able to go to church every day this week, but we can manage our time a little better and get up 15 minutes earlier to spend a little time with God; especially this week when we remember all that He has done for us: when we recall the shame and degradation that He suffered on the cross for us.
I have recently read about the social stigma that was attached to death on a cross in the early Roman empire. Death on a cross was reserved for the lowest of the low in society; usually vicious criminals or social outcasts. The more affluent or influential citizens could perhaps buy themselves a different death sentence - if they had the right connections.
That was one of the main things that confounded the Jews - that the Messiah would debase Himself so much as to die on a cross! Preposterous!
Holy week begins with Christ's triumphant ride into Jerusalem, receiving Hosannas from the same crowd that would call for His crucifixion 5 short days later. He soars to the heights of recognition on Palm Sunday only to be brought low to be shamed, hated and scorned on Good Friday. The least we can do is take a little time to thank Him each day. In the words of Nicole C. Mullen, "I just want to thank you Lord, cause You took the heat for me."
